The evolution of the iconic Albert Park Circuit continues.
Looking back at through the chicane of turns 9 & 10 is like thumbing through an old photo album.
For years, it has been the definitive image that has linked the growth of Melbourne to what is now Albert Park’s long history of a modern-day Grand Prix Circuit.
In the event's 25-year history, the cars on circuit have changed as much as the Melbourne skyline that forms the back drop of the Australian Grand Prix. In that same time, this sector of the circuit has remained largely untouched, and as Formula 1® returns to Melbourne in 2022, it’s here that we see Albert Park’s most dramatic changes.
Lap times dropped by a staggering 12-seconds per lap since Melbourne hosted its first Grand Prix in 1996, and the changes through sectors 2 & 3 are set see them reduced by a further 5-seconds. The new-spec 2022 Formula 1® cars are set to reach speeds up to 330km per hour and have the drivers experiencing an estimated 5.4G as they enter Turn-9.
It’s not just the racing that benefits from the re-vamped Albert Park Circuit as the changes have produced some great new viewing areas, opening up brand new opportunities for fans to get closer and see even more of the action on the track.
This is Episode 3 of a four-part series, exclusive to the Australian Grand Prix’s YouTube Channel, detailing what has been described as the most significant facelift of the Albert Park Circuit in the event's 25-year history.
