F1 teams have a new problem in 2021: any expensive damage they pick up through crashes eats into the new spending limit that is in the rules this year. It’s led to calls from Ferrari and Red Bull that the teams of the drivers responsible for accidents should pay for rivals’ damage, or damage that isn’t the fault of the driver in question shouldn’t come out of the capped budgets. Scott Mitchell explores if those theories are workable, and he also looks into suggestions that drivers shouldn’t have to serve grid penalties if crash damage takes them over their allocation of engine components during a season
