The 2020 Drift Masters King of Riga took place this weekend at Bikernieki Circuit in the heart of Latvia’s capital city. Against all odds, the Drift Masters European Championship’s efforts to bring together Europe’s best drifters for a one-off event in 2020 was a roaring success.

One of the fastest and most challenge circuits was the perfect battle ground to crown this year’s King of Riga, with defending DMEC champion James Deane doing battle with Worthouse teammate Piotr Więcek in the final, and James taking a hard-fought victory. Jack Shanahan would watch his fellow countryman lift the trophy from the third step of the podium.

During Friday’s qualifying event, Poland’s Piotr Więcek would top the table, snatching P1. He would be closely chased by James Deane in P2, and Jack Shanahan in P3.

Friday’s relatively event-free qualifying session would be succeeded by Saturday’s main event, filled with fire, crashes, spills, close battles and high adrenaline. Local Latvian wild cards did battle with DMEC pros, with a few upsets along the way.

In the Great 8, Latvia’s Kristaps Bluss would do battle with Piotr Więcek and, with both drivers pushing hard, Kristaps would meet the wall in front of the grandstand, handing the win to Piotr. On the other side of the bracket, Marco Zakouril’s BMW would burst in flames whilst being closely followed by James Deane, however the fast action of the track marshalls ensured a safe outcome for all involved.

Więcek would meet fellow Polishman Adam Zalewski in the Semi Finals, with Zalewski putting up a fair fight, but unable to topple the Worthouse driver.

As many predicted, it would be Więcek versus Deane in the final, and the battle would bring with it all the fireworks and close competition we have come to expect. With multiple nudges, bumps and contact throughout both runs, and despite little separating the two drivers, it would be James Deane who came out victorious.
