They were monsters, the fastest F1 cars ever, yet they not only completely failed to solve the problems these regulations were originally meant to solve, but in many ways made them worse.
But they still stand as the most remarkable cars in grand prix history So while they may have been a mistake, the five years these monsters bestrode the circuits of the world will be remembered among the most glorious in F1.
