Sebastian Vettel was accused of failing to live up to the standards of a role model as a long-simmering argument between Formula 1 drivers and FIA race officials boiled over at the Austrian Grand Prix.
The FIA stewards slapped Vettel with a suspended €25,000 fine for expressing frustration at the drivers’ briefing and then walking out.
An apology to race director Niels Wittich helped ease Vettel’s punishment but the unexpected, controversial episode only served to underline what has been clear for some time: F1 drivers are fed up, and the FIA has some serious firefighting to do.
