Lewis Hamilton has endured such an awful run with Mercedes over the past two seasons that he actually began questioning his own ability as a Formula 1 driver.
It seems almost ludicrous that a driver so successful and skillful - a genuine megastar of motor racing - could encounter genuine self-doubt at this late stage of such an amazing career, but that’s what happened.
It seems Lewis almost couldn’t believe it was possible for a team as great as Mercedes to produce two such terrible cars - and so he began to question himself as well as the team for which he has won six world championships and 82 grands prix.
And it’s this inner turmoil that surely led to Hamilton's father Anthony reaching out to Red Bull, a story that blew up in the build up to the 2023 F1 finale in Abu Dhabi.
And despite all the who-said-what debate around that story, we understand there was genuine interest from Hamilton's side to at least explore the possibility of making what would have been F1's ultimate bombshell move.
We’ve now had some fresh insight into what Hamilton was feeling at the start of yet another bitterly disappointing F1 season.
