Mercedes looked like it needed a pretty big change to its Formula 1 car design during a difficult start to the 2022 season.
But hints of good performance have been enough for Mercedes to keep improving its existing design and stick with its unique, almost non-existent sidepods, even though big changes have been mooted for 2023.
Some have pinpointed the sidepods as a potentially major flaw in the “concept” but Mercedes says that’s just a distraction from a much more complicated development process for this year and beyond.
