Fernando Alonso's decision to come back to F1 after two years away wasn't about securing instant success with the rebranded Alpine team in 2021. But Alonso will be watching as closely as anyone to make sure that this rejigged team - with new management, an unexpected senior departure, and a revised technical team that came in too late to influence the 2020 car very much - is heading in the right direction. This year is about setting the groundwork for a real push in 2022, and Alpine needs to prove it is on the right track ahead of the major rules overhaul next year that it hopes will offer it a chance to vault up the order with Alonso on board.
